The first qualifying session of the weekend for the LMGTE and GTC competitors taking part in the 3 Hours of Imola produced a pole position for the two famous Italian manufacturers Ferrari and Lamborghini at their home circuit. Ireland’s Matt Griffin secured the LMGTE pole in the nr52 RAM Racing Ferrari 458 Italia, just six hundredths of a second ahead of the nr67 IMSA Performance MATMUT Porsche 911 GT3 RSR of American Patrick Long. Griffin’s lap came at the end of the 20-minute session that was interrupted by a red flag when the Irish driver spun off at the final corner and was beached in the gravel trap.

The car was recovered to the pits and Griffin was allowed to rejoin the qualifying session, with the result he secured the pole position for this afternoon’s race.
Gunnar Jeannette in the nr53 RAM Racing Ferrari secured third position on the grid, just ahead of Joel Camathias in the nr66 JMW Motorsport Ferrari. In the GTC class the session belonged to the nr60 Kox Racing Lamborghini Gallardo LP600 GT3 of Dutch driver Peter Kox, who secured the top spot by nearly half a second ahead of his nearest rival Stefano Gai in the nr62 AF Corse Ferrari 458 Italia GT3. Kox set a lap of 1m43.752 to post the sixth fastest time of the combined LMGTE and GTC session. The 3 Hours of Imola will begin at 16:00 (local) this afternoon.
